The bone is made up of both hard tissue, which gives strength, and the much softer and weaker bone marrow. In osteoporosis, the amount of hard bony tissue is reduced and the bones become more fragile. Fractures are more likely to occur in the wrist, hip and spine.
Who is at risk?
Smokers, heavy drinkers, those who are inactive, underweight and/or have a poor nutrition, those who are post menopausal or on long term steroids.
How can I reduce my risk of developing osteoporosis?
1) Take regular weight bearing exercise, eg walking, golf or dancing
2) Ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D intake. Aim for 3-4 portions of calcium rich foods per day, for example, a glass of milk, 30g of hard cheese, 150g of yoghurt, tinned fish with bones, or orange juice with added calcium
Most people under 65 years of age are able to obtain adequate vitamin D by exposing their face and arms to sunlight for approximately 30 minutes per day between April and October. However, some people may require calcium and vitamin D supplements or to take drugs such as Alendronate (Fosomax), Residronate (Actonel) or Etidronate (Didronel PMO)

Dr Anne-Marie Kelly and myself are hoping to work together and concentrate on reducing cholesterol levels. We'll be addressing both medications and lifestyle changes to help you reduce your cholesterol to below 5. It is important that your cholesterol level is checked at least every 6 months. If you're not sure when your cholesterol was last checked, or you don't know what level it is - ask! We're also thinking about developing a diary for you to monitor your own results. Would this be useful?

Sodexho is hoping to implement a new catering system in the next couple of months. The new system will enable you to choose your meal either the day before or on the actual morning - not sure which yet. So everybody should get a choice and there'll be a larger range of meals being offered too!

I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to those of you who took the time to complete and return the questionnaire on group sessions. Your opinions on the service are much appreciated. I'm hoping to set up a number of group activities. If you have any ideas, please contact me either by e-mail annmarie.nixon@smuht.nwest.nhs.uk or you can write to me at the Transplant Centre.
